写真家、村田啓さんによる連載「光景｜All I Can See」。銀座という舞台を通して、人の視覚とその奥に潜む不思議さを見つめ直します。
左右に揺れる視界、交わることのないふたつの眼差し。今回は、馬の目とそのスイングを手がかりに、視界の分断と接続について考えます。
#3 「馬の目、スイング」
馬の目について想像する。
左右に離れた視点は人よりもはるかに広い景色を捉えており、そのためにお互いに交わることなく、それぞれが同時に異なる世界を映し出している。右の目には草原の果てが、左の目には揺れる木々が写り込む。身体で風景をなぞるように、鼻先を震わせ、耳を動かし、頭を傾け、首を振る。そのスイングによって生まれた残像が草原と木々を繋いでいるとすれば、左右の風景にとっては馬のスイングはお互いを結びつけるメディウムで、馬の体はそのメディウムの容器だ。
風景の中にある馬がどこか浮世離れしたものに見えるのは、左右に分断された風景が離れることのないようにその境界でスイングを続けているからなのだろうか。
村田 啓

1990年生まれ。現在東京を拠点に活動。2016年、東京藝術大学大学院美術研究科絵画油画専攻修了。視覚やスケールの変容への興味を基として写真や映像を用いた作品制作を行っている。

Photographer Kei Murata’s series, All I Can See, explores the mysteries of human vision through the backdrop of Ginza, uncovering the unnoticed depths that shape our perception.
A field of view shifting side to side. Two gazes, set apart, never meeting. In this installment, Murata turns to the horse—to its wide-set eyes and the rhythm of its motion—as a way of thinking through how distance and connection coexist in what we see.
#3: “A Horse’s Eye, A Swing”
I imagine the eye of a horse.
Its vision, cast far to either side, captures a broader world than ours—two views, held at once, never crossing. In the right eye: the edge of a field. In the left: trees swaying in the wind.
The body traces the landscape—nostrils twitching, ears pivoting, head tilting, neck swinging. That swing leaves behind a blur, an afterimage that ties the grassland to the trees.
If each eye holds a separate world, then the arc of the horse’s swing may be what connects them. A movement that bridges distance. A body that becomes a vessel for that connection.
Perhaps that’s why a horse, standing in a field, feels somehow unearthly—because it lingers at the threshold, forever swinging, keeping two worlds from drifting apart.
Kei Murata

Born in 1990, Kei Murata is an artist and photographer based in Tokyo. With a Master’s degree in Oil Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts (2016), Murata creates works that examine the transformations of perception and scale, using photography and video as his primary mediums.
